Every boat tied to a fixed dock spends its life absorbing small shocks. A passing wake lifts the hull, the line goes tight, and for a fraction of a second the cleat, the line and the fitting all take a load far above the boat’s static weight. Repeat that a few thousand times a season and something gives.
The load spike is the problem, not the weight
A moored boat sitting still puts very little load on a line. The damage comes from the sudden snatch as the boat is lifted or pushed and the rope stops it abruptly. Because the rope has almost no give, the deceleration is fast, and force is what fast deceleration means.
A snubber — whether an integrated bungee section or a separate rubber device — introduces controlled stretch. The same energy is absorbed over a longer distance and a longer time, so the peak force drops sharply.
What that means for the boat
The visible benefit is that the boat stops jerking against the dock and the fenders stay where you put them. The invisible benefit matters more: cleats stay bedded, deck fittings do not work loose, and the rope itself lasts because it is not being shock-loaded past its comfortable range.
It is also considerably quieter, which anyone who has slept aboard next to a snatching line will appreciate.
Sizing by boat weight
Bungee dock lines are rated by the displacement they suit, not by the size of the dock or the diameter of the cleat. Using a line rated for a small runabout on a heavier pontoon means the elastic section bottoms out immediately and you are back to a plain rope.
Oversizing is a milder mistake but still a mistake: a snubber that never stretches under normal conditions is doing nothing. Match the rating to the actual laden weight of the boat.
Clips, loops and how they attach
Quick-connect clips make tying up in wind or on a rising tide much easier, and for a boat that comes and goes daily they are worth the small premium. A spliced loop over the cleat is simpler, cheaper and has nothing to fail.
Whichever you choose, check the metal. In salt water 316 stainless resists pitting far better than 304, and the difference shows up within a season on a clip that lives half-submerged.
Where a snubber is the wrong answer
On a floating dock that rises and falls with the boat, the geometry is already forgiving and plain lines are perfectly adequate. In a berth with severe surge, or where a boat sits for months, heavier fixed lines with separate rubber snubbers give more control than an integrated bungee.
Elastic is a shock absorber, not a substitute for correct line lengths and angles.
Chafe is what actually cuts lines
Almost no dock line fails in the middle. They fail where they pass over a chock, a rail or the edge of a dock. Chafe protection — a length of split hose, a purpose-made sleeve, even a rag lashed in place — costs nothing and doubles the working life of a line.
Inspect the wear points, not the length. If the outer sheath is furred anywhere the line touches something hard, it is time to move the wear point or replace the line.
How many lines, and where
A boat alongside wants at least four: bow, stern and two springs. The springs are the ones people leave off and the ones that stop the boat surging forward and back along the dock. Adding springs is usually a bigger improvement than upgrading the bow line.
Buy lines in pairs. Almost every attachment point on a boat has a mirror image on the other side, and mismatched lines pull the boat crooked.

Rope construction, in one paragraph
Three-strand nylon stretches, which is why it has been the traditional dock line for a century: the rope itself acts as a mild shock absorber. Double-braid is stronger for its diameter and handles better, and stretches less. Polypropylene floats and is cheap, and it degrades in sunlight faster than either.
For a fixed dock, three-strand nylon or a bungee line gives the give you want. For a tow line, low stretch is a safety property rather than a comfort one. Matching the construction to the job matters more than paying for the highest breaking strain you can find.
